Inexpensive Trees

Cheap model trees are very poplar.
I need some trees for my modern scenery (though trees are good for anything). I looked around for some inexpensive ones. The problem with inexpensive pre-built trees is that they look like crap. So, I figured I could make my own and teach you folks at the same time.
Sorry about the picture quality. I'm to lazy to set up my studio lights. Its also something that doesn't really need perfect pictures for you to get the point. =)

For the trunks I do a base coat of Calthan Brown Foundation paint, then a stipple of Elf Flesh and after the flock has been glued down and dried, a Scorched Brown fade around the edge of the grass. The fade gives it more of a break between the grass and tree.
I spent $15 for the foam a long time ago. It was 2" x 24" x 96". I think most of my trees are going to be around 2" cubed. That means I can get around 576 'foliage shapes' out of a sheet. No one needs that many trees beyond the Arbor Day Foundation. The bases I use in this example are Games Workshop Titan bases, also something I have had for a while. You could uses them ($4.50 plus shipping for three), cut them out of plastic or even order some of the small wooden ones you can get laser cut online from Litko. The trunks are free (as long as you live around some trees). The foliage can cost around $30 for a big bag, but the one I used cost me about $7.
So for about $30, I can build as many trees as I need (or until the foliage runs out). Not counting paint and glue.
A good deal for me, since I'm a cheap bastard nowadays. =)

A tree is a perennial woody plant. Trees are an important component of the natural landscape because of their prevention of erosion and the provision of a weather-sheltered ecosystem in and under their foliage. They also play an important role in producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as moderating ground temperatures. Trees play a role in many of the world's mythologies.
Trees are also the haven of one of man's oldest enemies... the Squirrel!
